Selby Shrooms was founded by Jonathan MacGibbon originally as a blog to report interesting mushrooms species.
I was walking my dog one day around Selby and noticing the literal tonne of Saffron Milkcap biomass that was being ignored and rotting all around the area. We decided that if they are going to go to waste anyway, why not get them out and available to gourmet kitchens everywhere.
Since then I have also been amassing taxonomical information on species of interest that I have encountered locally – some considered traditionally to be edible, some just really of interest. They are all blogged here. The images are all mine except where otherwise credited. We don’t mind other people using these images (several have turned up on social media uncredited) but it would be cool if they were credited to us as they constitute considerable effort out in the field in my own time and at my own expense.
I can’t find a “contact us” button on your website, so do not know where you are. Please provide contact details. I spent my first ten years in rural Austria, where Chanterelle (Austrian Dialect: Eierschwammerl), High German Pfifferlinge) and Porcini(German Herrenpilze) grew wild and were easy to find. ( I came to Australia in 1949)
Visiting Vienna recently I really enjoyed a dish of Chanterelle. I am pleased to have found your site and am likely to become a customer.
Thanks, Nick Berg
Hi Nick thanks for your message – we were having a bit of trouble with the contact tab but it should be up now.
The southern native chanterelles in Australia lack the pepperiness of the European and American ones although I do have a few leads on European ones popping up in a stand of trees somewhere. I hear the Southern QLD chants are a bit stronger in flavour (with bigger fruit bodies as well) and I was told that the chants around Cairns and Darwin are quite good.
Thanks for your interest.
Hi Neil – it appears we are having some problems with the webpage. I will try to fix this tomorrow.
Thanks
Hi there,
I am interested in getting a few agar cultures from your store, and can not find your email address. A couple of them are not currently available:
LEPISTA SUBLILACINA – THE LILAC BLEWIT – CULTURE
and
FERAL BLUE OYSTER CULTURE – PLEUROTUS OSTREATUS VAR. COLUMBINUS
Do you have any idea when they will be back in stock?
I was wanting to also order:
DONT FEED AFTER MIDNIGHT’ ALBINO PEARL OYSTER (PLEUROTUS OSTREATUS) PETRI DISH CULTURE
and
WINE CAP (STROPHARIA RUGOSOANNULATA) PETRI DISH CULTURE
Cheers,
Lee
Hi Lee – looks like a few quirks with the website. Lepista sublilacina is still in testing at present but should be available next year. The blue oyster currently being definitively identified (as we are not 100% certain that it is not a native Pleurotus species) so we need to wait until that work is done.
The other two are ready to go. Ill try and get the website fixed in the next 24 hours or Ill send you an email on how to order.
Thanks
Hey there,
I see everything is apparently “sold out” – am wondering and hoping that you are still in business and are able to sell us some King Stropharia please (am in Aldgate, SA so perfect conditions for such a mushroom).
Hi there – yes we are having a break from culture and spawn sale for the foreseeable future while we concentrate on other projects.
Hi, do you have a paddy straw mushroom culture or spore print?
Cheers,
Luke
No unfortunately im not sure there are any reliable cultures of this in Australia
